Too Too: The Lethwei Icon Who Battled Inside and Outside the Ring
Few fighters have left as lasting of a mark on Lethwei, also known as Burmese boxing, as the legendary Too Too had done. Renowned for his ferocious power and unyielding spirit, the Burmese giant carved a legacy that extended far beyond his remarkable record. Over a career spanning 66 recorded fights, he amassed 39 wins (34 by TKO/KO), 1 loss, and 26 draws. His journey in Lethwei began in 2010 and continued until 2020, with a brief foray into Muay Thai, competing in six bouts between 2013 and 2014.
Throughout his career, Too Too claimed numerous accolades, including the prestigious 75kg Gold Belt in the World Lethwei Championship’s Middleweight division at WLC 3: Legendary Champions in November 2017. Beyond this monumental achievement, he secured four gold medals and one bronze in additional championships and tournaments, further solidifying his status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
In early 2021, Myanmar descended into turmoil following a disputed democratic election in which the National League for Democracy (NDL) secured a resounding victory. The armed forces of Myanmar, led by Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, staged a coup d’état, detaining key political figures and inciting widespread protests. Among the many who stood in opposition was Too Too, who participated in demonstrations against the military junta.
In April 2022, Too Too was arrested, accused of possessing weapons and explosives in addition to his opposition to the regime. Tragically, in April 2023, concerns about his fate escalated when rumors emerged surrounding his death in custody. While it is confirmed that he passed away, the circumstances remain shrouded in uncertainty. Reports suggested he was shot while attempting to escape, but these claims lack verification and eyewitness accounts. Others speculate he died under detention, possibly subjected to torture at the hands of the Tatmadaw, Myanmar’s military junta.
Although the exact details of his final moments remain unclear, what is certain is that Too Too's courage extended beyond the ring. His willingness to stand against injustice and fight for his beliefs mirrors the same spirit that defined his career. In both his triumphs and his struggles, Too Too remains a symbol of resilience and strength—a legacy that will continue to inspire fans of Lethwei and beyond.
